| E3 has come and gone and unfortunately it did not bring with it much news directly relating to the Kingdom Hearts series. We did however get a bunch of information on new systems from Sony and Nintendo. Sony unveiled their new handheld the PSVita and Nintendo showed off their upcoming console, the Wii U.
Let’s talk about the PSVita first. Recently Square-Enix has been dabbling in the handheld market. It shouldn’t come as a surprise if they show some interest in the PSVita, especially since it is an incredibly powerful one and the Kingdom Hearts games have been known to look great and run well. The more expensive model will have access to 3G through AT&T which could help Square-Enix get into the multiplayer market they’ve been looking into.
Now, let’s take a look at the Wii U, a console that, hardware wise, is stronger than the PS3, the 360 and the Wii. The Wii U has a special tablet controller that allows you to play your game when the TV is occupied and the console is still on. It adds a DS-like feel to a home console. What could this mean for Kingdom Hearts? Well, I don’t think it will mean much. The Kingdom Hearts series doesn’t appear like it will benefit much from this new system’s biggest appeal which seems to be the controller. We saw it in 358/2 Days; the second screen did not enhance the game much. The more powerful hardware is nice but I feel as Square-Enix will use the PS3 for the next console game as they are more familiar with that tech from Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
I expect to see more information about all of this at the Tokyo Game Show in September. Expect gameplay videos, trailers and, hopefully, some announcements regarding the future of the Kingdom Hearts series in just a few short months. And not to worry, KHDRInsider has a ton of content and features planned such as articles and media to tide everyone over until September. | |
